Triund trek is one of the most popular treks . This trek takes you through the kangra valley and snow covered dhauladhar range. It also awaits to stun you with its breathtaking views. This trek just takes a weekend to complete and is hassle free. The trail is a steepy one but trailing through the rhododendrons and oak trees, with different species of birds singing all the way is a blissful experience.
You get to experience the best view right after climbing a little, starting from the moon peak to riffle horn to Arthur’s seat and dhauladhar range; it presents you with the most delightful views of the high range. Though the forest portion is very less, it still stays in your mind and you’ll relish that experience forever.
Walking through the rhododendrons pine and coniferous forests it takes you to the ridge holding the most breathtaking views of all. With that being said, sunset in that trek is a cherry on the cake, a never miss view. With its golden Rays beaming, it crawls up and down behind the high raised mountain ranges.
Beginning of the trek
The Triund trek starts from its base camp located at dharamkot. There are other ways also , but Dharamkot takes you through the densely packed pine forests. Dharamkot lies 2 km from McLeod ganj which can be reached by a 25 minutes walk from the bus stand. If at all you opt for public transport, buses going via Dharamsala will take you to the main square of McLeod ganj.
Requirements
You have to make sure that you carry your trekking shoes and pack your bag with minimal luggage. Carrying thermal wears, light colored dresses, sunglasses, sun caps,woollen wears, insect repellant and trekking poles is a must.
Make sure to carry your personal medical kit.

The temperature ranges from 16-25°c during days and drops to 7-10°c during night.
Post monsoon, the temperature is expected to range form 14-18°c during the day and can drop to 1°c during nights. Located at an altitude of 9,278ft,it’s quite an easy trek.
The trekking experience
Starting from its base camp situated at dharamkot. Moving up the trail from the water tank near the government primary school you climb through the forest. After a ½ an hour climb you’ll reach the galu temple clearing.
The main trail from there takes you to the shrine, from there the trail rises gently and runs through the dense oak forest. It lands on a rocky spur after passing the steepy section. From here you can witness the main mountain ranges peak and the entire stretch is an awesome spot for bird watching.
This trail takes you through 22 bends throughout the trek ,midway through the trail you’ll come across a magic cafe, from where the trail gets steeper. The last couple of steepy bends takes you out of the dense forest to the ridge that spreads across a good length of kilometers to the south into the Kangra valley.
Best time to experience
March to June gives you the best weather conditions to trek. April to May is a perfect pick to escape from the harsh weather. Post monsoon you’ll have the clearest view and of course December gives you spellbound experience amongst the snow fall on the trek.
Difficult portions
Make sure to take proper trekking gear and be cautious while you walk through the rocks, which can be slippery. The way through the Bhagsu waterfall, takes you through the steepier and extremely slippery path.
Facts to know
Carrying a valid ID is a must. There are no entry fees. Apart from that you’ll have to go through the checking at the check post, where your backpacks will also be checked by the forest officers. Consumption of intoxicating substances is not allowed and thus carrying them is prohibited. Also, you are not permitted to go on the trek after 2pm through the forest check post.
The closest hospital is located at 5kms distance away from the base camp at dharamkot. And it also has few ATMs at mcleodganj.
Overall, the triund trek is easy yet a tricky trek and a blissful adventurous experience. It is also a friendly trek which can be taken by even novice trekkers.
